500 days of summer.

Yes.

Uh hmmm.

That is right.

It is DEFINITELY not your usual romantic comedy nor love story that pulls at your heart strings the whole time in order to stimulate that few tricklets or tears.

However, it is one of the most honest, realistic, witty and yet independently artistic films of the year that I have watched.
For those of you who have been in the know of indie films or have done your fair share of research on this film before it was screened, you would definitely be entertained at a very satisfactory level by the movie.

But for the mainstream viewer who does not really lean towards movies of the indie persuasion, you might find this film just a little too heart breaking and the dialogue and presentation a complete surprise, hopefully a pleasant one though.

Yes, I might be an Indie buff but I do love the happy endings as well, at least happy in the scenario where BOY meets GIRL, falls in LOVE and live HAPPILY EVERAFTER.
Having said that, viewing from the romantic's point of view, I can totally understand the heartbreak!

Tom and Summer were just the perfect couple. How often do two young singles meet in an office elevator while one listens to BOTH their favourite band on his ipod LOUD enough for the girl to hear. And yes, just like the caption under my facebook Display Picture, The Smiths were the matchmaker. How coincidental can that get, considering that The Smiths are not exactly the most popular band on mainstream radio today. What can I say, a great inspirational match maker then.

Although the introduction to this film has its narrator explicitly quoting:" this is not a movie about love", in reality, it really is just the opposite.
500 days of summer depicts clearly but subtlely the mentality of the young ones about love today. It also brings you on a ride through the journey of struggles faced by the minority but a large enough population of females who just want to enjoy falling in love but not being in love(a.k.a love doesn't exist). Most of you would think that most men think that way and that their mentalities and attitudes would only change when they are most probably in their mid-30s when they finally want to settle down. But Summer here, just in her 20's already does not believe in the notion of everlasting love.

However, we all know she fell in love with Tom and vise verse, not to mention madly and passionately. But I guess it was just the "right person" at the "wrong time" which still ends up in a break up.

Nevertheless, Tom's original ideals of "the perfect one" that were almost so completely crushed and wiped out from his heart and mind were once again rekindled and reinforced by that very same Summer(pun intended for the GIRL and the SEASON) who broke his heart.
Not only did she find love and most importantly the belief of true everlasting love and the commitment that comes with it through her relationship with Tom, Summer also helped Tom realise that sometimes what you think is best for you might just not be what you are looking for. That in itself is love. Real modern day urban love with an extremely romantic and sincere after taste.

Love happens all the time, anywhere, everywhere. But truly it is coincidence or that fateful moment when you or the other person decides to grab the opportunity that really gives LOVE a place and space to grow.

It takes two hands to clap, if one doesn't feel the same way towards you or doesn't want the same outcome as you, it is no use forcing love. It just is sometimes.

However, having said that, never give up when it comes to love. I still feel that there was this loving connection between Tom and Summer after their break up(the last part of the movie where Summer placed her hand above his on the bench). Maybe if he had done something during that fateful party(at the end part of the show), Tom could have been the one receiving Summer at the end of the isle on her wedding day.

Then again, that is just my speculation.

After all, it is not true that what Tom and Summer shared wasn't true love, it is just the wrong timing and the differing mentalities of the chance at love they both had at that time that broke Tom's and along with him all the audiences' hearts.

In fact the love between these two indie music lovers is one of the rare, genuine love stories that most people never ever get to experience.

Maybe that is why a love as real as that never really made it to being THE ONE you are looking for, it is too precious and fragile, it just is and should just stay that way, only for those special moments in life.

This love, this passion which everyone longs for but that doesn't last a lifetime becomes bittersweet memories that would linger in the depths of our heart forever.
Not a bad idea. When love is always the ideal while companionship is commitment.

Movie presentation, cinematography, artistic direction, script writing and music production : at least 4/5 for ratings.
